BMI chart by height and weight for adults

Find your height in the left column and read across to your weight. The number is your body mass index; the shading is the CDC adult category it falls in. For example, 5′9″ and 160 lb is a BMI of 23.6, in the healthy weight range. The same chart applies to women and men.

Every value is computed by the BMI calculator engine, which takes any height and weight, not just these steps.

Reading the chart

Is the BMI chart different for women and men?

No. For adults 20 and older, CDC places a BMI in the same category regardless of age, sex, or race, so one chart serves women and men alike. What differs is what a given BMI is made of: BMI counts muscle and fat alike, so two people with the same number can carry very different amounts of body fat.

Can children and teens use this chart?

No. For ages 2 through 19, BMI is read against a percentile for age and sex rather than these fixed cut-offs, using CDC's child and teen calculator. This chart applies to adults.

How do I calculate BMI myself?

Divide weight in kilograms by height in metres squared. In pounds and inches, multiply weight by 703 and divide by height in inches squared. At 5′9″ and 160 lb, that is 23.6.
